Why Your Brand Photos Are Saying the Wrong Thing (and How to Fix It)

Updated: Apr 2

You know that feeling when you walk into a room, and something just feels…off? Maybe the music's too loud, or the lighting's too harsh, or the vibe is just weird.

Well, ever thought your brand photos can give off that same "off" vibe and you might not even realise it?

Think about it: your brand photos are often the first impression people get of your business. They're your digital handshake, your virtual shop front and your chance to show the world what you're all about.

So, what happens when those photos aren't quite hitting the mark? What if they're not telling the right story, or worse, they're sending the wrong message entirely?

Don't worry, we're going to fix that.

The Silent Storytellers

Great visuals speak for you — before you’ve even said a word. They show your audience who you are, what you’re about, and whether they want to stick around. They communicate on a level that words sometimes can't reach and empower us to either want to connect, or not.

  • They convey personality: Are you warm and approachable? Bold and dynamic? Your photos should reflect that.

  • They build trust: Authentic, high-quality visuals show that you're professional and credible. Stock images or generic photos? Not so much.

  • They set the tone: Are you high-end and sophisticated? Fun and energetic? Your visuals lay the groundwork and in turn attract specific responses from different personality types.

But here's the kicker: if your photos don't align with your brand, you're going to create a disconnect.

It's like showing up to a black-tie event in your gym clothes.

Pic Problems

So, what are some of the biggest mistakes businesses make with their brand photos? Let's break it down:

  • The "Corporate Clone" Look: Stiff poses, forced smiles, and generic backdrops. It screams "I'm just like everyone else." We don’t want that, we want to showcase and celebrate uniqueness!

  • The "Cheesy Stock Photo" Vibe: We've all seen them. They start off as a temporary solution or placeholder with a new website build and then collect dust for several years unchanged. Model-like faces in staged images that look like they belong in an advert. They lack authenticity and feel totally disconnected.

  • The "DIY Disaster": Anyone with an iPhone is a photographer, right? Sure they can take a great photo, however, there is so much more that goes into capturing a great brand photo. Any dip in quality, lighting or presentation takes award from your brand.

  • The "Inconsistent Storyteller": If your photos are all over the place… different vibes, styles, tones, it’s like your brand has an identity crisis. And that’s not exactly trust-building.

How to Fix It: Creating Visuals That Work

Okay, so your photos might be making some mistakes. How do you turn things around?

  1. Get Clear on Your Brand Story: What's your brand's "why"? What are your values? What feeling do you want to evoke? Your photos should be a visual representation of that story.

  2. Ditch the "Should Haves": Forget what you think brand photos should look like. Embrace your unique personality and let that shine through. Showcase your team, your services, your clients, your work.

  3. Think "Main Character Energy": Your photos should make you look and feel like you own the room. Confident, impactful, and impossible to ignore.

  4. Invest in Professional Storytelling: This isn’t about snapping a few decent pics. It’s about creating visuals that stop the scroll and start conversations. (That’s where I come in, by the way.)

  5. Be Consistent: Your visuals should have a cohesive look and feel across all your platforms. This builds brand recognition and creates a polished, professional image.
